Dermal Fillers & Cosmetic Injectables at ReDerm MD Medical Spa
Cosmetic Fillers and Injectables are used to address facial signs of aging like nasolabial folds (commonly known as "smile lines" or "laugh lines"), volume loss and facial lines and wrinkles.
At ReDerm MD Medical Spa, we use several types and brands of fillers and injectables. Injectables such as; Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®, and the Dermal (hyaluronic acid) Fillers Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Defyne®. We also use the non-hyaluronic acid filler, Sculptra®, which stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production to help restore its inner structure and increase facial volume.
BOTOX® and Dysport®
Botox® is a trade name for a refined version of the botulinum toxin type A, originally isolated and refined by researchers seeking to help people with eyelid and facial spasms. It has been safely used for this purpose since the 1980’s. Dr. Fante is the author of scientific articles on the medical uses of botulinum toxin type A and has vast experience with this medication.
We’ve all heard that botulism is a form of food poisoning. Yikes. How can a poison be used therapeutically?
Well, not to worry. It’s only poisonous in a large dose, about 100 times what will be used cosmetically, because then it paralyzes muscles. For cosmetic treatments, it’s been approved by the FDA. Injected precisely into specific muscle areas in tiny doses, it relaxes the muscle and relieves it from unconscious and unnecessary movement, thus preventing it from making wrinkles.
Alternative brands of botulinum toxin type A, such as Dysport® and Xeomin® are also available at our office. We will explain the differences between the brands to you if you like.
Botox® relaxes your face
We tend to learn facial habits as we grow up, facial expressions that become habitual, and over the years start creating permanent lines. Botox® injections don’t totally stop all muscle movement; they just relax the muscles and allow the skin to become smoother.
This gives us a refreshed look, as if we had a good night’s sleep and feel in a good mood.
How many Botox® injections do I need?
Typically, the Botox® is injected in 4 or 5 areas on each side of your forehead, and 2 or 3 at each eye area. Other areas around the mouth and neck can also be treated. But of course, each face is unique. So we will work with you to use the right number of small injections to make for you, in just the right places, to give you optimal results. Our office has vast experience with these treatments.
Details about Botox® treatment
- Beforehand, several photographs will be taken of your face, from different angles, so that you can compare your new look with this previous look.
- The injections take only a few minutes and are done with a very fine, tiny needle. There’s not much pain, but some people feel minor, temporary discomfort.
- There’s no recovery time necessary. Most people go right back to work or their normal activities after treatment.

Facial Fillers
The modern fillers are most commonly composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring chemical that is already in your body as the gel between your cells, in your joints, and other places. Our office uses several different brands of injectable filler for different kinds of facial enhancement, and we will advise you regarding the best choices for your face. Enhancements range from helping with more beautiful lips to softening wrinkles and creases, and even improving the shape of your cheekbones. JUVÉDERM® is a “next generation” smooth gel, non-animal dermal filler offering a natural look/feel and long-lasting results – six months or longer. JUVÉDERM dermal filler is so long-lasting because it’s the dermal filler currently available with the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid. In addition, a special formulation process creates a smooth gel that flows easily into the skin, reliably creating a smooth, natural appearance.
It comes in three different formulations: Ultra XC, Ultra Plus XC, Voluma XC, Vollure® XC, and Juvéderm Volbella® XC. We can help you decide which one(s) are right for you. People love them.
Juvéderm Vollure® XC is the newest addition to the Juvéderm® family of dermal fillers. Vollure® is designed for the correction of moderate to deep creases and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds running from the nose down to the corners of the mouth, and parentheses lines framing the mouth.
Juvéderm Volbella® XC is perfect for adding subtle volume and shape to the lips. Plus, it erases the vertical lines that come from volume loss. Juvéderm Volbella® XC does this without overtly enlarging the lips. It provides a more subtle option when compared with Ultra or Ultra Plus. It is also very helpful for crows’ feet and fine lines around the eyes when Botox® isn’t enough.
The RESTYLANE® family of fillers
At ReDerm MD, we offer all six facial fillers in the Restylane® family. Like Juvederm®, all of these are hyaluronic acid fillers and intended for different areas of the face.
Restylane® – This was the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler, and is still very popular across the globe. It targets marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and other wrinkles by adding volume beneath the wrinkle or crease and pushing the surface skin upward. Its results last from 6-12 months.
Restylane-L® is basically Restylane® with Lidocaine added for comfort. This filler is ideal for improvement in the tear trough and for dark circles below the eyes.
Restylane® Silk is an alternative to Juvederm Volbella. It is used for subtle lip enhancement and for the correction of vertical lip lines. It provides results for around six months.
Restylane® Lyft adds volume to the cheeks and corrects smile lines. It is an alternative to Juvederm® Voluma. Results last from one year to 18 months.
Restylane® Refyne was approved by the FDA in December 2016. This new addition to the Restylane® line (along with Defyne, see below) is used to correct smile (marionette) lines and nasolabial folds. Refyne is specifically formulated to treat mild to moderate lines and wrinkles. Galderma has cross-linked the gel in Restylane®Refyne and Defyne to help support the patient’s natural expressions — for real-life results that help maintain natural movement when smiling, frowning, or otherwise moving your mouth.
Restylane® Defyne – Approved along with Refyne, Defyne also specifically targets nasolabial folds and marionette lines. The difference is that Defyne is designed for use on moderate to severe creases and lines. Both Refyne and Defyne provide results that last up to one year.
Fillers used for scar treatments and lip augmentation
Hyaluronic acid is non-inflammatory and so it is effective in treating scars, and is a favorite for lip augmentation, either to accentuate a more beautiful shape or to add plumpness.
Filler Procedure
- For a few days beforehand, avoid using aspirin or Vitamin E, as they can increase bruising
- We will offer you a topical local anesthetic
- The injections themselves take anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour or so
- Very small amounts of filler are injected into several locations with a very fine needle
Great results
- You’ll be able to see the results almost right away.
- There may be a little swelling or redness that will disappear within 1-3 days. Bruising infrequently occurs and resolves within a week.
- You’ll see a fresh plumpness in the area, giving you a more youthful look.
- Results last anywhere from 6 months to a year in some cases.
- Voluma XC is a special case that lasts 2-3 years.
Sculptra™
Another alternative is Sculptra™, which is not a filler but a chemical that encourages your body to form new natural collagen to enhance your appearance. Sculptra™ originated and was approved by the FDA in 2004, for treatment in cases of facial fat loss (called lipoatrophy) for individuals suffering from human immunodeficiency virus. When our faces lose their underlying supplies of fat, we start to look hollow-eyed and sunken-cheeked. With the success of Sculptra™ as a cosmetic enhancement, it was then released for administration to any other individuals who want similar benefits.
Sculptra™ was approved by the FDA in 2009 for cosmetic correction of facial wrinkles, contour deficiencies, smile lines and other problems in healthy people. It is the first facial injectable that gives you noticeable results that emerge subtly and can last up to two years.
How does Sculptra™ work?
Sculptra™ is a synthetic and biocompatible substance that can be injected below the skin in hollowed-out areas to plump them up again. It works by gradually thickening the skin, for a more natural appearance. It is a less-expensive, less invasive comparable alternative for patients who desire but don’t yet require, the benefits of a cheek lift, neck lift, full or mid facelift. For some people, Sculptra™ may be an alternative to Juvederm Voluma XC for cheek augmentation.
Made from a material called poly-L-lactic acid, rather than from animal or human material, Sculptra™ requires no skin test. A poly-L-lactic acid, it is biocompatible (doesn’t harm the body, cause allergies, etc.), biodegradable (can be broken down by the body), and has been successfully used in other surgical products.
About the Sculptra™ procedure
- A local anesthetic is first applied.
- Sculptra™ is injected in the desired area.
- You will undergo treatments once a month until the results are what you want, typically three to four sessions.
- The results are not immediately visible; they happen gradually and can eventually end in a dramatic change.
After the Sculptra™ procedure
- Some patients experience redness in the treatment area, minor swelling or bruising, and slight discomfort, but these symptoms typically disappear within a day or two. You can use ice packs as soon as your treatment’s finished, to minimize these after-effects.
- You will be shown how to massage the treated areas five times a day for five days.
- The results can last for 2 years, or even longer in some cases. Some patients also return for touch-up treatments.
Almost all patients are able to return to their daily activities immediately after treatment. A full series of Sculptra™ treatments is approximately half the cost of a cheek lift, with noticeable results after the completed regimen.

Vitamin B-12 Injection: Vitamin B12 is required for the proper function and development of the brain, nerves, blood cells, and many other parts of the body. A vitamin B deficiency can cause acne, sensitivity to sunlight, cracked lips, dryness, wrinkles, rashes, and an uneven complexion. Proponents of vitamin B-12 injections say the shots give you more energy and boost your metabolism, helping you shed unwanted pounds.
