What Is SkinPen Microneedling?
SkinPen is a non-surgical, cosmetic microneedling device that creates "micro" skin punctures to stimulate tissue regeneration and improve the appearance of the skin.
Immediately following an injury, our skin begins the process of clearing damaged tissue and replacing it with new cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM). Microneedling enables controlled induction of the skin's self-repair process by creating precise micro-injuries that automatically trigger remodeling without causing scar tissue formation.
SkinPen Microneedling Candidates
One of the most exciting things about SkinPen is that it can be used on all skin types and colors. It is a great option for individuals seeking to address concerns such as fine lines, acne scars, uneven skin texture, and mild skin laxity.
However, it may not be suitable for those with active skin infections, open wounds, or certain medical conditions, which is why a personalized consultation is important. Talk to one of the ReDerm MD professionals to discuss your specific needs.
Areas of the Body SkinPen Microneedling Can Treat
SkinPen's variable needle depth allows for versatility, and therefore it can be used on many parts of the body, including the face, neck, and décolleté. We have also seen great results using it on stretch marks and scars on various parts of the body.
How to Prepare for a SkinPen Microneedling Treatment
Preparing your skin properly can help you get better results and reduce the risk of irritation.
In the days leading up to your appointment, avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning beds, and harsh skincare products like retinoids, exfoliating acids, or scrubs. Keep your skin clean and well-hydrated, and let your provider know about any medications or active skin concerns.
On the day of your appointment, arrive with your face free of makeup, lotions, or sunscreen. Following your provider's specific pre-treatment instructions will help your skin respond more comfortably to the procedure.
What to Expect From the SkinPen Microneedling Procedure
The procedure typically takes 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the area being treated. Most SkinPen users apply a topical anesthetic to the skin prior to the procedure.
We would like you to arrive 15-30 minutes prior to your appointment to apply the topical anesthetic for your comfort. This allows for a relatively pain-free experience.
Follow-Up Treatments
The number of treatments required will be determined by one of our skincare professionals and based on your individual goals and skin health. Most patients receive a series of 3 procedures spaced about 4 weeks apart. However, if you are addressing scars, you will most likely need a series of 4 procedures.
SkinPen Microneedling Downtime and Side Effects
After your appointment, your skin will feel more sensitive as it begins the natural healing process.
For the first 24–48 hours, avoid direct sunlight, strenuous exercise, hot showers, and activities that cause sweating. Skip makeup, harsh skincare products, exfoliants, and active ingredients like retinol or acids until your provider says it's safe to resume them.
It's also best to avoid swimming pools, saunas, and steam rooms during the early healing phase. Focus on gentle cleansing, hydration, and sunscreen use to support recovery and protect your results.
SkinPen Microneedling Results
Patients may notice healthier-looking skin immediately. However, your skin's natural repair process continues over several weeks.
Keep in mind that dermal collagen remodeling takes place over time. Damage that has occurred over an extensive period of time won't disappear immediately. You may not see the final result for 3-6 months after your final session.
Microneedling With PRP
Microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combines controlled micro-injuries to the skin with platelet-rich plasma derived from your own blood to support the body's natural repair process. The PRP is applied during or after treatment to promote faster healing and improve skin texture, tone, and overall rejuvenation.
Benefits
This treatment uses your own cells, including growth factors from platelet-rich plasma, to support natural skin renewal. Because the material comes from your body, adverse reactions are unlikely. The process triggers a healing response that rebuilds underlying tissue, helping to firm, smooth, and improve circulation for a healthier appearance. Most patients heal within 5 to 7 days.
Candidates
Microneedling with PRP is ideal for someone who wishes to improve the appearance of minor skin imperfections, including fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, scarring, and uneven skin tone and texture.
Microneedling with PRP is not recommended for those who have used Accutane within six months, have open wounds or a skin infection, have had radiation treatment within the last year, are pregnant, or have a history of keloid scars.

FAQs
Can SkinPen Microneedling Be Combined With Other Skincare Treatments?
Yes, SkinPen is often combined with other skincare treatments to support overall results. One common option is PRP, which may help speed up healing and support skin renewal. It can also be incorporated into a broader skincare plan that includes facials, medical-grade skincare products, or other non-surgical treatments spaced appropriately between sessions.
Is SkinPen Microneedling Safe for Sensitive Skin?
SkinPen microneedling is generally well-tolerated, even for individuals with sensitive skin. Because the treatment is customizable, your provider can adjust the needle depth and intensity to suit your skin's needs. They also apply a topical numbing cream to improve comfort during the procedure.
Is There an Age Limit for SkinPen Microneedling?
There is no strict age limit for SkinPen microneedling, but it is typically recommended for adults with concerns like acne scars, fine lines, or uneven texture. Younger patients may be candidates in certain cases, while older individuals can benefit from collagen support. A consultation helps determine if it's appropriate for your skin and goals.
